Welcome back to another Todd & Tony Show blog, where we dive into all things RV life, adventure, and practical tips for making the most of your rig. This time, Todd sat down with Ross from RV Tips and Travels to talk about an often-overlooked but incredibly useful habit: filling your RV’s freshwater tank—even when staying at a campground with full hookups!
The Unexpected Benefits Of Always Filling Your RV’s Freshwater Tank
Ross shared his personal experience of always filling up his RV’s freshwater tank and relying on his water pump rather than using direct city water pressure. While this started as a simple habit, he soon realized the numerous advantages it offered:
Consistent Water Pressure – If you’ve ever stayed at a campground with low water pressure, you know how frustrating it can be. Filling up your freshwater tank and using your RV’s water pump ensures consistent pressure for showers, washing dishes, and other daily needs, no matter what’s happening at the campground.
No Power? No Problem! – During one of Ross’s camping trips, a neighboring camper lost power and, with it, their water supply because the park’s well pump was electric. Since Ross was using his RV’s water pump and tank, he still had running water while others were left high and dry.
Avoiding Water Pressure Fluctuations – Many campgrounds experience water pressure drops, especially in the mornings and evenings when multiple campers are using water at the same time. By using your freshwater tank and pump, you stay unaffected by these fluctuations.
No Need for a Water Pressure Regulator – If you always use your tank, you don’t have to worry about installing a water pressure regulator to protect your RV’s plumbing from potential high-pressure issues at different campgrounds.
Things to Consider When Using Your Freshwater Tank
While using your RV’s freshwater tank for daily use has plenty of benefits, there are a couple of things to keep in mind:
Managing Water Levels – It’s a good idea to monitor how much water you’re carrying. If you’re getting ready to leave a site, consider using up or dumping excess water to avoid unnecessary weight while traveling.
Periodic Tank Flushing – Stagnant water can lead to bacterial growth or bad odors, so be sure to periodically flush and sanitize your tank.
Filling Up Upon Arrival – Even if you’re staying at a site with city water, it’s smart to fill your tank when you arrive. This way, if there’s a water outage or pressure issue, you have a built-in backup ready to go.
Final Thoughts
You’ve already invested in an RV with a freshwater tank—why not use it? Taking a few minutes to fill your tank at the start of your trip ensures reliable water pressure, a backup water supply, and a smoother overall experience.
